How Many Hashtags?
For years, the answer to “how many hashtags should I use?” was essentially “as many as you can fit.” Instagram has since rewritten the rules, and the old stuff-the-caption approach no longer works — in some cases it actively hurts.
What changed
Instagram removed the ability to follow hashtags in late 2024, and in December 2025 it capped posts and Reels at five hashtags. Tags no longer act as a reach multiplier the way they once did. Today they function more like metadata: signals that help the algorithm classify and route your content, not standalone engines of discovery. People can still find you by searching a specific tag, but piling on thirty hashtags does nothing except clutter the post.
How many to actually use
For feed posts, three to five well-chosen hashtags is the sweet spot — one broad category tag paired with a few niche, specific ones. For Reels, keep it tighter at two or three, since the algorithm leans more heavily on audio, captions, and visual cues there. Precision now matters far more than volume.
What matters more than hashtags
Content quality, watch time, saves, and shares carry more weight than any tag you attach. For luxury brands, that shift is welcome news: a small set of precise, on-brand hashtags paired with beautifully produced content will out-perform a wall of generic tags every time. Treat hashtags as a quiet filing system for the algorithm — and put your real energy into the work itself.
